Instructions for taking care of your Mexican Hammock

Instructions included with each hammock

  • Take care of your hammock and it will last for many years

  • Be careful with buttons, earrings, rings, watches, etc when you are in your hammock, they could snag on your hammock and you may brek a thread when pulled. If this happens, grab the broken ends to the nearest string intersection or reweave and retie. If it is a nylon hammock, burn the ends of the knot carefully with a mosquito coil so it does not fray. This will leave your with an imperfection but will not affect the use of your hammock as a whole

  • When storing just make a knot close to the loops (see imagen A) to avoid tangling, fold the hammock, then wrap the hammock with a rope. Never put your hammock away damp. Always transport your hammock in a bag or pillow slip to avoid snagging.

  • To wash the hammock, make a knot close to the loops (see imagen A) Swish it around in a bucket with warm water and mild washing powder. It is important not to use bleach. Leave it there for two hours, then hand wash, rinse in clean water and hang (see imagen C). Always make sure your hammock is completely dry before storing. Wash separatelly as colour might run.

Where to Hang your Hammock:

  • You will need two fixed points from which to hang your hammock.

  • String your hammock between any 2 solid points, including fence posts, trees, garage, house, post, Hammock Frame, etc. or any combination as long as they are strong enough to take the weight. Using heavy screw hooks and/or strong hanging ropes. When hung a Mexican Hammock should have a gentle curve with the center around 30 centimetres above the ground. For indoor applications, be sure the hooks are inserted directly into the wall or ceiling studs.

Entering the hammock

  • 1.- Open the hammock from the edge

  • 2.- Grab the edge of the other side of the hammock behind you and pull it over your head

  • 3 .- Sit in the middle the hammock

  • 4.- Lie back on it until you are comfortable, now the hammock is perfectly shaped to your body. If you buy a  King or Jumbo Mexican Hammock try to use it diagonally, this is the most comfortable position to relax in a Mexican Hammock

Hanging your hammock outdoors

  • If you plan to hang your hammock outside in a very sunny location we recommend you to store it in a shady spot or much better if it is under a roof, or buy one of our Outdoor Hammock Protectors. Your hammock will last longer if you take care of it. We recommend that you take the hammock inside after use. This way the hammock will last for a long time. Nylon and Thick string Cotton Hammocks last longer than Cotton Hammocks but it is necessary to protect them from the sun, rain, etc.

  • If you live by the sea rinse your hammock regularly to minimise the effect of damage by sea salt

Tangling

  • If your hammock is tangled it will not be a comfy hammock. To untangle your hammock just pass attaching loops back through the end strings.

Children and Hammocks

  • Children love hammocks, but there are some simple rules you need to teach them to have fun in a hammock safely. Do not leave children unattended in hammocks. Hammocks can be unstable, be careful entering and exiting your hammock as injury may result. Teach your kids to get into the hammock and to get out of the hammock as well, teach them a simple rule, bottom first never foot first. We recommend to hang your hammock lower when you have kids as it is easier for them to get in and out of the hammock. Children can become entangled in hammock strings.

To hang your hammock between two palms or trees with handcrafted ropes, follow the instructions:

  • A: Unwrap the nylon rope

  • B: Fold in half

  • C: Pass the nylon rope through the end loop of your hammock.

  • D: See the drawing to pass the end of the rope through the new loop

  • E: Pull back to make the knot

  • F & G: Tie the rope to the tree, and make a knot in the back side

  • H, I & J: Wrap the rope around to the tree again and make a knot in the front

  • k & l: Repeat steps D and J until you are out of the rope
